June Gloom
June Gloom is a short, dramatic film about a man’s journey home from prison. Going against the grain of the usual L.A. scenario, this 'life in a day' story offers a potent, visual interpretation of prisoner reentry. Using a naturalistic approach, June Gloom illustrates the harsh realities of life that challenge the thousands who attempt to return to society without a proper support system.
California has the largest prison population in the U.S. Based on prison overcrowding and a growing budget crisis, the state may be forced to release 44,000 inmates by 2013. June Gloom is only one story of the many that need to be told.
'June Gloom' is a Southern California term for a weather pattern that results in overcast skies with cool temperatures during the late spring and early summer. It lends our story a surreal quality. This weather phenomenon emits a distinct mood, which is also reflected in our characters... Nobody in this short film feels sunny and happy. Nobody. At its center is the Man, fresh out of prison, his life and future just as murky as an overcast day in Los Angeles. The lines are blurred between hope and hopelessness.
The film also raises questions about our legal system and the rehabilitation of its prisoners. June Gloom shows that without family and a proper support system, there’s no healing or realistic expectations for these former inmates to succeed.
