I undressed Los Angeles, layer by layer, with one smooth transition at a time until I got her where I wanted her. It’s one of my most viewed photos on Flickr and I thought it was perfect for this example. I wanted a quick, yet smooth, shift from reality to a more design-minded environment. We’re closing in on our completion date of ‘The Gran’ Scam of Things’ and what would an awesome short be without a proper poster? Half as awesome!
I must admit, we already had a proper poster in the works but I couldn’t stop myself from making my own version. Two is better than none, if you ask me. And alongside with all the work that is being done, like music and sound editing, we’re also running a fundraiser this month on Kickstarter. Type in gran scam and please donate if you can because every buck makes a difference.
Sometimes, when you try really hard to come up with a new design and step out of your comfort zone, ultimately all you end up with is a glorified Tide detergent logo.
I’m being sarcastic here of course, but I can’t help comparing this to the famous detergent box. In reality, this piece is a counter attack on the blue design that I use on my website. Let’s see if it’s strong enough to wash out the blue.
That’s actually not entirely true, because nowadays motion graphic artists create their own idents (station identification) to showcase their talent. It’s a fun and creative way of putting a signature mark on show reels and sometimes on projects. At any rate, I created these two designs as ident mock ups, but unless they start moving or Popscure becomes a TV station they are really just logos. Actually, if Popscure was a TV channel, these designs wouldn’t necessarily have to move.
Come to think of it, I could have created this bad TV retro look in After Effects a lot faster and easier…
…but it was well worth it because I’m still having fun with Photoshop.
